Why is taking expired, unwanted or unneeded medicine to a drug drop-off box important?

ACCIDENTAL CHILDHOOD POISONING
Medications often look like candy and children can be curious.

Throwing it in the trash gives easy access for children and pets.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS
Wastewater treatment plants and septic systems are not designed to remove all medications from wastewater. Drugs can end up directly in our drinking water. Medications found in waterways can lead to reproductive and developmental problems for fish and other aquatic wildlife.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Prescription and over the counter medications are being used by persons to get high.
Some have a perception that these medications are a safer way to get high.
