Meet the Register of Deeds

Melissa Nagel was appointed by Governor Doyle on June 1, 2005. Prior to that she had been the Chief Deputy since Jan. 1, 2001, she was then elected by the people of Crawford County in 2006. Melissa is a lifelong resident of Crawford County. She likes to spend her spare time horseback riding, snowmobiling, hunting and enjoying the outdoors with her friends and family. Melissa is looking forward to serving the community for many years to come.
Melissa has one deputy to help with the indexing of documents and issuing of vital records. Jennifer Kozelka is the Chief Deputy and is looking forward to helping further our advancement into the technological world.

The Register of Deeds Office records any and all documents that pertain to land within the county, they also file, index and create certified copies of all birth, marriage and death records that occur within the county. For information on recording fees and requirements please visit the Resources area of the website. If you would like to order a vital record please print out the designated form on the forms page and send it along with a check or money order to the office. We process vital record request the day we receive the request. At this time we accept check, cash or money order, sorry we do not yet accept credit or debit cards.

In June of 2001, the Register of Deeds office started optical imaging of all documents. This allows all of the documents from that point on accessible via the internet. Currently we are working on back scanning historical documents, making even more available over the net. This advancement will make it possible for our customers to get the information they need while at their computers at home. It is our goal to provide efficient and friendly service to our customers from in and out of Crawford County.

Crawford County is one of the oldest counties in the state and it's county seat is Prairie du Chien, the second oldest city in the state. Prairie du Chien's beginnings started around Fort Crawford and the American Fur Trade. The Dousman family, Wisconsin's first millionaires, headed up the fur trade in this region. The family home "The Villa Louis" is a State Historical Site located in Prairie du Chien on the banks of the Mississippi River. Click here to learn more about tourism in Crawford County.....
