Tobacco Prevention

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. It can cause serious health issues, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, and type 2 diabetes. Our Health Department’s Tobacco Prevention Program is dedicated to educating youth on the harmful effects of tobacco use, helping them make informed decisions, and ultimately preventing tobacco use before it starts.

About the Program

Every day, thousands of young people are exposed to tobacco products, and many are unaware of the long-term health risks involved. Through our evidence-based program, we provide youth with the facts and tools to understand the dangers of tobacco use and make healthier choices.

What is Tobacco Prevention?

Tobacco Prevention covers a wide range of important topics. We teach young people about the serious consequences of tobacco use, including the risk of cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and other chronic health conditions. We address common myths about tobacco use, such as the idea that e-cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes, helping youth separate fact from fiction. Understanding how tobacco use has evolved and its marketing tactics gives youth insight into how the tobacco industry targets their generation. We educate on the various forms of tobacco products available today, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco, highlighting the risks associated with each.

Why Tobacco Prevention matters?

The Tobacco Prevention Program is more than just about preventing tobacco use - it’s about empowering youth with the knowledge, skills, and resources to live healthier lives. By giving them the tools to understand the dangers of tobacco and resist peer pressure, we’re helping to create a generation that is stronger, healthier, and tobacco-free.
