Hidden in Plain Sight

About the Program

Substance use and risky behaviors can often be hidden in plain sight. For parents, guardians, and providers, recognizing the subtle signs of drug use or risky behaviors in preteens and teenagers can be challenging. That's where the Hidden in Plain Sight program comes in. This drug awareness program is designed to train adults to identify potential indicators of substance use, providing valuable insights into everyday items that may be hiding in plain view.

What is Covered in the Program?

The Hidden in Plain Sight program helps adults understand that substance use isn’t always easy to spot. Many teens and preteens will try to hide their behavior, making it difficult for parents and guardians to recognize the signs. Here’s what we focus on:

  1. Everyday Items as Indicators: Common household items, such as items found in bedrooms, backpacks, or cars, can sometimes be signs of risky behavior. The program teaches adults how to identify these items and understand what they could indicate. Items that seem ordinary on the surface could be clues to substance use or unhealthy behaviors.

  2. Spotting the Signs of Substance Use: Learn the physical and behavioral signs that may suggest drug or alcohol use, such as changes in mood, appearance, or performance at school. Early recognition of these signs can make a big difference in addressing the issue before it becomes more serious.

  3. Engaging in Meaningful Conversations: The program also helps parents and guardians learn how to approach their children about these sensitive topics. The goal is to foster open, honest communication, where youth feel safe discussing their thoughts, feelings, and any potential struggles they might be facing.

What can Parents do?

Research consistently shows that parents have the greatest impact on their child’s choices regarding substance use. The earlier you can spot potential issues and open the lines of communication, the better equipped you will be to guide your child toward healthier decisions. By recognizing the signs of substance use early, adults can act before the situation escalates. With the right tools, you can help your child make better decisions and avoid the many risks associated with drug and alcohol use.
