About Elder Benefit Specialists

The Elder Benefit Specialist Program is a federal and state mandated advocacy program, funded through the Older Americans Act and State dollars. The Elder Benefit Specialist assists county residents ages 60+ with accessing public and private benefit programs and understanding legal rights and procedures. They are supervised and trained by Elder Law attorneys to be highly knowledgeable on topics such as:

  • Medicare
  • Supplements and Advantage Plans
  • Prescription Coverage, including Part D and SeniorCare
  • Medicaid (Medical Assistance)
  • Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help
  • Social Security, including Retirement and Disability
  • Supplemental Security Income
  • FoodShare and Energy Assistance
  • Other Legal, Benefit, and Consumer Issues

 
How Can the Elder Benefit Specialists Help?

  • Provide accurate and current information on benefit programs
  • Assist with paperwork to apply for benefits or appeal denials for eligibility or services
  • Unbiased counseling on Medicare coverage options and enrollment assistance
  • Advocate on an individual’s behalf with other parties involved
  • Explain legal rights and procedures


What About Confidentiality?

All files and correspondence are kept locked, and your conversations with the Elder Benefit Specialist will remain confidential. You may be asked to sign a release of information so the Elder Benefit Specialist can inquire on your behalf.


What Is the Cost?

There is no charge for the services an Elder Benefit Specialist provides. However, persons assisted by the program are strongly encouraged to make a donation towards the cost of the service. Service will not be refused or limited in any way if a contribution is not made.
